The Early Childhood curriculum is founded on the belief that a child is a competent, eager learner who has already made many discoveries about the world. The task of the educators is to provide an environment rich with opportunities and to nurture each child’s ability to grow and develop emotionally, intellectually, and physically. A major goal is to affirm and stretch each child’s individual potential and at the same time help them to understand both the benefits and responsibilities of belonging to a group. Together, we build a community of learners. Sharing and caring for materials, listening as well as contributing in discussions, asking questions and finding answers, making good decisions about choosing activities and interacting with others, and being able to sustain attention are all essential goals. Social and emotional skills provide the framework for children to get the most out of any learning experience.

Social and Emotional Skills

Social Emotional development is at the heart of each day in the Early Childhood classrooms. Teachers are focused on putting the needs of the children ahead of what the schedule may say for the day.

Each day, children practice what it means to be thoughtful members of their community. Children receive guidance from their teachers on words to use when entering play, sharing ideas, and getting their needs met. They also learn how to listen to others, compromise, and build relationships.

Teachers take the role of guide or coach and help children learn how to assist themselves through self-advocacy. They also help children understand and become in tune with their emotions. Teachers explain that it is okay to feel a large range of emotions by teaching learners how to regulate their emotions and use them in productive ways.

Education at CC has a long, progressive tradition of experiential learning through in-depth and integrated studies.

Multifaceted classrooms involved in exploration may seem filled with spontaneous, unstructured activity. In reality, activities are thoughtfully orchestrated by teachers to provoke engagement and provide multiple ways to access and synthesize ideas.

Literacy

Speaking, listening, reading, and writing are all integral parts of the language arts program.

Speaking and listening skills develop through games, finger-plays, songs, poetry, large and small group discussions, partner work, think-pair-share strategy, mystery box, and most importantly through play. Learning how to communicate with each other, to understand and be understood, takes time – a lifetime, really!
